Retro Saturday

My mother was born in 1920 and she died five years ago today on Mother's Day weekend.

Mom always liked it when she had an opportunity to dance. She particularly liked to waltz. And whenever she could 'con' my father into waltzing with her, she would.

The video clip below was from the 1920's during her formative years as a child. She may have developed her appreciation of dancing from listening to music similar to this as a child.

In any case, this is for her love of living and love of dancing.

  1. I also lost my mom in 2007...
    (cursed be that year!!)
    She also liked dancing...
relying often on the kindness of strangers,
due to my father's indifference [or incompetence].
    I like this post,
since I am lost for words myself
    for this Mothers Day.
And you know I'm not often lost for words...
    Thanx!!
    :)~

    1. Thanks TB! I see 2007 was a pivotal year for us both.
Mothers can have that effect on us....keeping us quiet. Can be nice for a change.
      Have a good weekend.

    1. If there was a way, she would find it, I'm sure. Thanks MArtha.

  3. I love this number and always feel elevated when I see a clip of Fred & Ginger doing their thing. Now, I will always connect your mother with their dancing!

    1. Maybe that is why she always looked in her element, Pat. She was an erect- standing woman.

  9. I don't remember my parents going out dancing but it would've been during the 50's, not earlier, unless they did a bit of toe tapping before I was born. My favorite dancing couple in your video was the guy in tails dancing with the blonde--I think if he'd fallen on his head he would've slid halfway across the room with all that Brilliantine plastered on his hair! Does anyone waltz anymore other than on "Dancing With the Stars", and then in some cases, you still have to ask the question. I'm ok now with Mother's Day, but this Father's Day is going to be tough.

    1. It does take a couple of years doesn't it. Yes, this Father's Day will be tough, Christine for you but full of good memories, right?

  10. I'm never really sure what to do on Mothers/Fathers day anymore since they are both gone. My mom would have loved to dance but dad was an unwilling partner. She collected music boxes and a few years after she died I had called my dad and I could hear the music boxes playing in the backround. I asked dad what he was doing and he told me that he plays all the music boxes and 'dances' with his memories of mom. I guess I will always have that memory to get me through. Happy Mothers Day to your mom who is undoubtedly dancing in heaven....take care.

    1. Thanks Jojo. What a wonderful memory to have of your Dad! Funny isn't it how we all 'deal' with the loss of a loved one differently. Whatever works.
Oh, my Mom is dancing for sure!

  11. What a lovely tribute to your Mum :)

The dancing in the video is so elegant - my Mum thinks it's great that this style of dancing is becoming popular again due to being featured on TV…..

    Wags to all,

    Your pal Snoopy :)
