Contemplative Monday

The following quote is from 'Heart Advice, Weekly Quotes From Pema Chodron'.

RECOGNIZING WHAT'S GOING ON

" Our habitual patterns are, of course, well-established, seductive, and comforting.

Just wishing for them to be ventilated is not enough.

Mindfulness and awareness are key.

Do we see the stories that we're telling ourselves and question their validity?

When we are distracted by a strong emotion,
do we remember that it is part of our path?

Can we feel the emotion and breathe it into our hearts
for ourselves and everyone else?

If we can remember to experiment like this even occasionally,
we are training as a warrior.

And when we can't practice when distracted but know that we can't,
we are still training well.

Never underestimate the power of compassionately recognizing what's going on."

    1. Ani Pema does have good things to say and teach us all. I don't really plan to put certain photos with these 'lessons' but most of them usually work.

  2. That's a beautiful building.

I took up mindfulness a few years ago as part of treatment for depression. While I was doing it regularly I noticed that my senses were heightened. Everything was brighter, somehow, and more colourful. Thank you for the reminder. I shall try to practice a little today, and put it back into my life.

    1. That building is a hotel and is presently a 'Westin' hotel. It has had a few owners over the years.

AJ, that would be great if it helps you to do this. It has always helped me through tough times. I guess facing the truth about things and getting rid of 'junk' can help.

  4. Love your post Jim and especially love the idea of seeing and questioning the "stories that we tell ourselves". Sometimes it is hard to even recognize that we are telling ourselves something that might not be true. Mindfulness.... so important in our lives. Great post, and hope you are enjoying the season!

    1. Hi Jeanne. Yes, questioning what we are thinking and the stories we 'make up' can be quite surprising and a good thing to once in a while.
The season is beginning to feel like it ought....going to a few 'functions' with family and friends and ordering our Christmas dinner today at our favourite catering shop and snow on the way I hear....yes, tis the season!!

    1. Thanks Inger. I am glad they 'worked' for you. I thought these photos of a Halifax hotel at sunset would work mainly because they are what they are.....not too distracting and a simple image, not complicated.
